The electrical industry is one that always has jobs available, even in tough economic times. There are two major electrical concentrations: commercial and residential. An electrician can work in either field with economic success, or even work in both. A commercial electrician is responsible for working in business and public buildings and similar electricity systems. They may work on streetlights, stop lights, and other public fixtures. Residential electrical service focuses more on working in individual homes.

Both types of electric service involve the worker installing, maintaining, and repairing fixtures, wires, and other components of the electrical system. In both industries, one must get educated in their area of expertise. One can get a basic electrical degree, but some schools may offer a specialized training program that can help one become better in their chosen area, whether it be residential or commercial, and provides experience as an apprentice or assistant to a well-qualified and skilled electrician that is currently in business. One should gain experience with a commercial electrician if that is what they hope to do. The experience will likely involve working in office buildings, where a great deal of work is dependent on electrical machines like computers. New buildings will need lighting throughout and wiring for offices and public areas. If one would rather be a residential electrician, they should likewise work with a licensed electrician. They might work installing systems for new homes, or conduct repairs when called by homeowners.

Some electricians operate in both fields, making them especially handy. Customers can use one company for their entire home and business needs. This is especially helpful if one operates their own small business. These electricity professionals are resourceful and convenient. Residential and commercial electricians are valuable resources for customers around the world.

There are two main technologies used for smoke alarms: photoelectric smoke detector and ionization smoke detector. A smoke alarm can use one or both of these technologies to create a fire warning. These devices are usually attached to 120-volt house wiring, but they can also be powered by a lithium or 9-volt battery.

Photoelectric

A photoelectric smoke detector uses a light sensor and light-emitting diode inside a sensory chamber. If smoke flows into the chamber, it scatters the light beam and sets off the alarm. If the area is normal, the light beam should beam horizontally. A photocell placed at the bottom of the device will trigger the alarm if enough light is refracted vertically.

Ionization

An ionization smoke detector uses a small quantity of radioactive material for ionizing the sensor chamber. This allows the air chamber to conduct electricity, generating a current flow between two electrodes. If smoke enters the chamber, it causes the conductivity to decrease. If the conductivity decreases past a certain level, an alarm will go off.

Which is the Best?

The type of alarm you choose should depend on the room. Ionization devices are best used in rooms that have highly-combustible liquids that may create large-flame fires. These materials include paint, cleaning solutions, newspapers, and other flammable liquids.

Photoelectric devices are best suited for kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms. There rooms have large pieces of furniture that burn slowly, creating smoldering fires instead of large flames. It is impossible to determine which sensor is universally better for catching all kinds of fires. Each sensor is designed to respond to flaming fires or smoldering fires, so it will largely depend on the material being burnt.

Common Nuisances

27% of detector nuisances come from faulty power connections. Professional electrician services should be used to ensure the device is properly installed into the electrical system. Another 28% of nuisances come from kitchen detection, so avoid placing the detector nearby the stove or another area that regularly produces large amounts of smoke or heat.

One of the best ways to protect your home and your family is to install home security lights. Quite simply, the more well-lit your home is, the less attractive it is for a potential burglar or thief looking to break in and steal. If you imagine a home out in the country where there are no streetlights and there is nothing but a single porch light, you can imagine that this type of home might be more susceptible to prowlers and break in. Imagine now the other scenario: you have a home in a well-lit area, with exterior lighting adding a beautiful glow to the outside of the home while also making sure the home is properly illuminated at night. Proper outdoor security lights systems are one of the best deterrents for burglars looking to break into a home. The other reason for installing external security light systems is to provide enough light for video cameras.

Those who are considering security light systems for the exterior of their home should bear in mind that these systems are generally not that expensive to install and maintain. The increase to the electric bill is usually nominal. The increase of family security, however, cannot be measured by a few dollars per month. The sense of comfort and safety from home security lights is hard to put a price on. For those considering installing security light systems, it is best to consult with a certified security company or licensed electricians like C & J Electric, who can properly install your lighting system. With many home security systems, cameras are installed as standard equipment these days; adding exterior lights to your home will allow any video cameras to operate properly, providing complete exterior protection.

If you have been wondering about the best recessed lighting placement, you are not alone. It is a very common question that faces many homeowners. Oftentimes people aren’t aware of all the places that such fixtures can be installed in a home, but once you understand all the options available to you, it can be much easier to make a quality decision about their locations in your home. However, how can you learn about all the places where recessed lighting might be appropriate? Generally, the best way is by consulting with licensed electricians about recessed light placement.

Recessed lighting is lighting that is mounted in a ceiling, wall, or floor in such a way that the light is flush with the surface. C & J Electric’s professionals understand the details of homes and which places recessed lighting is best suited for. Sometimes homes will have limitations due to the placement of electrical wiring behind the walls. Of course, wiring can usually be changed or rerouted, but this may be more expensive than what homeowners are looking to pay at the time. Either way, it’s best to call licensed electricians for help.

So where should you put recessed lighting in your home? Consider rooms that have low ceilings, where a drop-down light or ceiling fan would restrict walking space or make the room seem cramped. Recessed lighting keeps the space lit without interfering with air space. Another ideal location is floor lighting in an outside porch or deck; having a lit pathway through a garden or deck can help your visitors, who may be unfamiliar with the floor plan.

You can also use recessed lighting within your home to accent an art piece or an interesting structural feature of your home. This creates a softer, more natural-looking glow around a painting or picture, rather than an angled track light. One place many homeowners overlook is the backsplash of tile in their kitchen; if you have a bold or colorful design, spotlight this feature with a recessed light. A recessed light saves space and is unobtrusive, allowing you freedom of movement, as well as increased storage space. Another benefit of recessed lighting placement is that it goes with all décor styles, and can blur corners, making spaces appear larger and more open.

Obtaining a skilled opinion from a professional is the right avenue to take. There are many common sites in homes where recessed light fixtures are appropriate; living rooms, studies, libraries, kitchens and baths are some of the most common places in homes where they fits best. However, depending on your home and your preferences, our licensed electricians can work wonders and install these light fixtures into places you never thought possible.

In spite of a relatively stagnant economy in many areas, jobs for residential electrical contractors are on the rise. According to some analysts, jobs in the electrical field are expected to rise approximately twelve percent over the next decade. This figure mirrors the growth projections of most other industries. However, when you differentiate between the various types of electricians, the jobs for ones who work in a residential setting are actually expected to experience greater growth than those that work in commercial or other sectors.

Most residential electrical contractors handle anything from installing new light fixtures to rewiring a circuit to accommodate a new appliance. Ironically, however, it is actually homeowners’ increased desire for energy-saving technologies that will help to create a surge in these types of jobs. Homeowners will rely on residential electricians to install new green technologies like solar panels.

Although the industry has very little turnover, there is a generation of electricians that is preparing to retire, and someone needs to fill their shoes. The reasons for the low turnover are often the same reasons that many people choose to enter the industry. Becoming an electrician requires years of training, and most professionals are reluctant to leave an industry after they have spent five years training in it. Another reason that there is low turnover is that the industry has fairly high wages. The median hourly wage for an electrician is between 17 and 30 dollars per hour. Obviously, there are variances to these figures, and an apprentice will make roughly 30 to 50 percent less than that.

Although the training is long and the work is physically demanding, becoming one of the world’s residential electrical contractors is a great choice. The job growth projections are positive and this is one of the few industries that is still largely protected by unions.

When you need an electrical contractor, choosing one can be as difficult as choosing a family physician or an attorney. Opening the phone book or running a quick internet search will probably yield hundreds of local professionals from which you can choose. One of the easiest ways to narrow down your search is to receive a stellar recommendation from a trusted friend or associate. However, with or without that recommendation, here are three things you should know before hiring any electrical contractor.

First, make sure that anyone you hire is technically proficient. Electrical work is not something that you want to trust to any general handyman. Make sure that the contractor you hire is licensed in your particular area. If they are licensed, you can be assured that they will know and follow the National Electrical Code. Not having extensive knowledge and training in safety codes could mean danger for your home or even your family.

The second thing you will want to consider is their reputation. Look for any online customer feedback on the company or consider asking the company if they can give you any testimonials or references from past clients. Also, check their rating with your local Better Business Bureau. The BBB contains reviews as well as consumer’s complaints about local companies.

The third thing that you will want to consider is how well the contractor is suited to your particular needs. Determine if you need someone to install wiring in a new dwelling, deal with an emergency, rewire portions of your home, or something else. Once you have determined what needs to be done, see if you can find someone who specializes in that particular field. Finding a specialist can ensure that your work is done correctly and carefully.

By keeping these three points in mind, you should be able to find an electrical contractor who is skilled, reliable and a good fit for the job. Although you should not hire someone who is charging an unfair rate, shy away from merely choosing the company with the cheapest quote. The sensitive nature of electrical work means that hiring the wrong company for the job could be an absolute disaster.

Although a handy homeowner can do a great deal of home improvements, there are certain jobs that should never be attempted by anyone who is not a master electrician. Of course, you may do small electrical jobs by yourself if you are feeling confident. These jobs include things like changing devices or fixtures. For instance, if you want to replace a light fixture, feel free to try it on your own, but anything more complicated than that should always be turned over to a professional.

Electrical work is definitely the most dangerous work that can be done in a home. A botched plumbing job may flood your house or ruin some of your possessions, but the impact of a botched electrical job could be death or fire. One job that you certainly should not attempt on your own is adding new circuits or replacing existing wires. The voltage that can safely run over a circuit is extremely specific and is governed by strict codes. A licensed and trained master electrician will know these codes to the letter, and he can guide you on what exactly needs to be done and how it should be completed. Differentiating from the code even slightly could shock you or start an electrical fire. If you attempt something really difficult like hooking a generator to your home’s electrical system, you not only endanger yourself, you could kill an unsuspecting utility worker if you do it incorrectly.

If you have an older home, you may know that old wires were often coated in rubber. This material wears away and is easily gnawed by rodents. However, simply because you can

identify a potentially dangerous wire does not mean that you have the skills to replace it. Failing to call a master electrician to do this project for you will almost certainly be disastrous.

When you are looking at doing electrical work, remember that you are addressing more than whether or not a light will turn on. You are affecting the state of your home and the safety of your family. Your family’s safety should always be your first priority, and the only way to ensure their ultimate safety is by turning to an experienced master electrician every time you have an important electrical job.

Are you tired of stumbling around in the dark at night? Are you concerned that criminals can move about in your yard unseen? Or maybe you are just frustrated with trying to get a key in your lock when you cannot see clearly. Are you in need of emergency lighting if the power goes off? If your answer to any of these questions is yes then security lighting will make your life a lot easier.

When you are in need of outdoor or indoor security lighting you’ll find that there are many different types to choose from. The total number of options can make a decision difficult for some people. If you are in need of security lighting that turns on in the event of a power failure, and the system will need to be designed and installed to switch on the moment that the main power disconnects. This type of installation requires a professional electrical contractor. Outdoor security lights often include motion detectors and yard spotlights. These types of outdoor lights require special wiring and placement in order for them to work correctly.

Many security light installations require running underground cable from the power panel to the light source. Many people believe that this is a simple as placing a wire in an underground tube. Unfortunately, electrical code in most areas requires that the installation be done according to a strict standard. In most cases rated conduit and special wire designed to resist water and other environmental conditions is necessary to meet the electrical code requirements.
